CaboPlast inaugurated Cabo Verde's first plastic recycling unit this morning. This unit will recycle plastics not only from Caboplast but also from other companies and from all municipalities in the country.
According to CaboPlast's General Director, Chady Hojeige, the unit, located in the Achada Grande Trás industrial zone, budgeted at around 150 thousand contos (about 150 thousand contos), has a recycling capacity of approximately 300 tons per month.
“Currently, we have a fixed installed capacity of almost 300 tons, somewhere between 250 and 300 tons of plastic recycling per month, and of different types of plastic, because there are different grades within the plastic family, with a budget of around 150 thousand contos,” he explained.
Regarding the impact on job creation, Chady Hojeige revealed that, currently, 20 people work in the production sector, working with the machines.
However, since associations and organizations will be involved in the plastic collection process, the final impact will be greater.
"Currently, we have about 20 people in our recycling unit. We're talking about people who work directly with the machines, but when we analyze the impact this will have nationally, across all the islands, within associations and others, I don't know if I can give actual numbers, but it will be quite significant, because it also impacts municipal landfills in all municipalities. Therefore, I believe a large number of people will be involved in this project," he emphasized.
The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, believes that this unit will contribute to wealth generation and said that a trip to Santa Luzia Island is being planned so that the public can observe the amount of plastic there and find solutions for its removal.
"It will contribute to the development of industry, to a stronger economy, to more jobs, but also to a better environment, sustainable management of our environment. We are planning a trip to the island of Santa Luzia so that Cape Verdeans understand the amount of tons of plastic that exist on this island, and we need to know how to remove this plastic from the island. We also have a large amount of plastic in our seas, and microplastics will harm our marine biodiversity. This is all what we have to consider in projects for this island: a stronger economy, more jobs, more income for families, transforming waste into wealth, and also improving the environment," he highlighted.
The plastic recycled by this unit will be used in the production of plastic bags, garbage bags, and polyethylene pipes from CaboPlast, and can also be used in the construction of septic tanks. The plastic recycling unit in Cape Verde will process plastics from all the islands in the country.
Currently, work is underway to sign partnerships with city councils, and a collaboration with the Praia City Council is already underway.
